ABOUT

New Midland Group (NMG) is a consortium of three artist-led organisations located in Nottingham. Backlit, One Thoresby Street and Primary support the development of artists in the City and the wider region, providing space for the production and display of art.

The original Midland Group – formed in 1943 – was a centre for progressive and experimental visual art in Nottingham, and as an organisation had a profound effect on the development of performance and live art nationally, before closing in 1987.

Building on the legacy of The Midland Group, we aim to work together to develop the profile and sustainability of contemporary visual arts in the Midlands, through research, activity and opportunities. A strategic approach to sustaining creative research for artists at all stages of their careers has helped Nottingham to become increasingly recognised as a centre for thriving studio practice and public activity.
